What topics/speakers would you like to see at general meetings?

(We are trying to boost monthly attendance and would appreciate any responses we can get.  We are programs co-chairs for the next year and would like to get more members at the meetings.)

Emergency preparedness. Especially if we have experts in the club who may be willing to speak or I am sure service professionals have programs for clubs like ours. Or even CPR / First Aid training. I am sure anyone interested would be willing to pay her part.

Here are some of my ideas:
bullet

An Early Childhood Education expert to talk about all aspects of preschool: how to choose a preschool, skills needed for kindergarten, the importance of play, how to teach a child self-regulation, how to tell when your child is ready for preschool/kindergarten, etc.

bullet

Yet another parenting speaker: There are like 3 different methods taught (at least!) in the area, it would be interesting to hear the different ones & compare.

bullet

A speaker on housecleaning with kids around, like Flylady (maybe she has someone like her in the bay area).

bullet

Someone to speak about physical activity & kids.

bullet

An expert in potty training!!!!

bullet

Maybe someone who could talk about "going green" in your house (cleaning, recycling, organics)? This one might not be too big of a topic. Maybe just talk about the things we can do that would make the biggest impact. Most people I know are only willing to go partially green :).

Check with other local area Mother's Clubs & see whom they have had for their most successful speakers.

bullet

Maybe have Jodi (from Music Together) come & teach the moms the importance of music, how to include music, what types are best, how to play with music, how it helps the developing brain, etc.

bullet

Someone to speak on ways to make your favorite recipes "light" (in calories), including take home handout of recipe substitutions. This would be a good one for group participation after the speaker.

This may seem lame, but often other groups I've belonged to have better turn out when something is given away (not raffle style, like everyone gets something little!). Seems a little childish, but for whatever reason, it works!

I'd be interested in:

effective storage solutions for toys/clutter

bullet

How about some speakers on baby/children nutrition? How about a meeting on parenting tips? (Like Nanny 911, I know we can't get her to speak to our Mom's group- just using that as an example).

I would be more likely to attend if there are seminars (Dr. Soloman was great) and if there are more specific activities to do (I think the board game night was a good idea). It’s less fun for someone who doesn’t know a lot of other moms to just hang out and exchange recipes, etc. It’s natural for members to talk to other members they know (I’m not blaming anyone!), and then the newbies are kind of left out.

I would love to have a meeting on updating your resume / getting yourself back into the workforce after being home with your kids. After being home only two years, I'm feeling a little out of the loop and feel like this would be helpful.
